Muni Reviews: 30 Minutes or Less (2011)

So this weekend Kazed and me went down to London to the Empire Big Screen event, to see clips of films that haven’t been released yet, as well as watch two feature films: Cowboys & Aliens (which Kazed has reviewed), and 30 minutes or less. So the synopsis for this is pretty cool, two wannabe criminals (Danny McBride & Nick Swardson) kidnap and pizza delivery boy Nick (Eisenberg) strap a bomb to him and give him 10 hours to rob a bank or else they’ll blow him up. Nick goes to his best friend to help him get the money and save his life. So right off the bat I want to say this is quiet possibly the funniest film I’ve seen all year (still haven’t seen Bridesmaids, but think if I did it would still win.) Aziz Ansari (Parks & Recreation) is a breath of fresh air on screen, he is a natural comedian and has had cameos in Funny People and I Love You, Man; but this time around he’s in the entire film. I think he actually makes the film as funny as it is, the audience was in fits of laughter and it was justified.  Jesse Eisenberg after his critical and commercial success on The Social Network, made this film work, he plays a different character to what he’s played previously which also includes Zombieland and The Squid and the Whale, and I think he did a very good job, he was funny, charming, and very likeable on screen. McBride was not as funny as he could have been there were glimpses of moments where it was funny, I thought Swardson did a better job and was much funnier specially which the “that’s what she said” line at the end. The story is new and unique, as it hasn’t been done before. For me, it works. The film has a good flow and keeps the audience engaged as well as having an entertaining script with a lot of funny lines. For those who keep up with news and current affairs, would have read this film being slammed is recent weeks as it is similar to the real life horror of a man having a bomb strapped to him and he died. The story line for 30 minutes is different to the real life event and shouldn’t be interpreted as the same thing. The chemistry between the actors is amazing to watch on screen, you could tell that they had fun making this film, the characters were hilarious and story was very engaging. I honestly believe when this comes out that this is going to be a box office success, as well as be a critical success. I think Aziz Ansari is really funny and I’m glad an Indian guy has got a huge break as a leading man on screen, I believe he’s the stand out guy for me in the film and stole the screen every time he was on. He’s one to watch out for the future. Jesse does a superb job and thinks he made a wise choice making this film rather then a drama. Overall I’d say go watch this film. Seriously, you won’t be disappointed. I’ve read that it comes out in mid September in the UK, which isn’t a long time away but I feel privileged to have watched it so early. The acting is amazing and so is the story. 9/10

Trailer for 30 Minutes or Less(2011)

It's a little overdue, but seeing as Movieville is covering the film at the Empire Big Screen Event in London this Saturday, I figured before it's reviewed, may as well post a trailer which hasn't been done yet.   Hilarious. Hilarity. Funny. Thoughts, people?

Lola reviews: Machete (2010)

I don’t really know how to explain this film in a proper review-type-fashion? So I'm going to bullet point words which express my views: ridiculous sexy amazing unbelievable hilarious mexican explosive Basically, Machete is amazing. It’s ridiculous in a BRILLIANT way, and absolutely hilarious. You get to see Jessica Alba naked, Danny Trejo use a living mans intestines to swing out of one window and smash through a window on the floor below, Lindsay Lohan have a threesome with Trejo and her on-screen mother, and also, Michelle Rodriguez is so sexy in it, I almost wanted to dump my boyfriend and start a worldwide hunt to make her my girlfriend. It’s so strange, that when you go and see it, you’ll understand my inability to write a proper review for it, but I will go as far to say that it is the best movie I have seen in a long time. Well done Rodriquez. 10/10 Thats right. TEN OUT OF TEN.

Lola reviews: 127 Hours (2011)

I initially went to see this movie because I have a massive I-should-be-ashamed-of-myself crush on James Franco. I’m not really familiar with Danny Boyle’s work, and have never seen what I presume is his most successful movie Trainspotting . I knew he must be good, however, as my boyfriend happily watched this with me on our one year anniversary knowing I’d spend the entire time gawping at Franco. Awesome! The film is an adaptation of Aron Ralston’s autobiography ‘Between a Rock and a Hard Place’ which tells the amazing story of how the cocky climber had to amputate his own lower right arm whilst stuck in a canyon. While solo-canyoneering in Blue John Canyon (Utah) Ralston fell down a pretty huge crack and as he fell, a boulder fell with him, landing on, and ultimately crushing, his right forearm. Ralston was stuck for five days, with hardly any food, and a limited supply of water. Dehydrated, and delirious (and after being forced to drink his own urine - gross) Ralston decides his only way of surviving is to perform an amputation on his own arm. Wow. It was pretty brutal, and according to Metro.co.uk “during the film's first public screening three people reportedly fainted and one person suffered a seizure” whilst witnessing the amputation scene. It has also been compared to the Exorcist, as one of the most shocking scenes in film history. Yes it was gory, he hacked off his own arm with a blunt multi-use tool, but ultimately an excellent way of showing what really happened. It’s not excessively bloody, it stays true to the real life horror this man was faced with, without turning it into a gore-fest. This film is incredible for a number of reasons: The scenery is absolutely stunning. So much so, it WILL make you want to hop on a plane and wander around canyons for the rest of your days. Second, it is a true story which is always amazing. It shows Ralston’s realisation of the fact, that he is stuck there because he was too arrogant and cocky to tell anyone where he was going. Therefore, no one knew where to look for him. You witness this realisation, his acceptance of the fact he’s going to die, and then the complete focus he has on not giving up. Finally, Franco’s performance was amazing. He wasn’t sexy in this movie, he was dying. He wasn’t one of those ‘oh i’m minutes away from death, yet somehow i’ve got lipgloss on’ kind of actors, he was raw, emotional, and incredible; Chapped lips ‘n’ all. Well done Franco. Oh, and a little note, although the movie is about a man who is stuck in a canyon for 127 hours, the movie doesn’t drag which I kind of expected it to. Bravo Boyle, that must have been tricky, but you succeeded! Overall, I was massively impressed with this movie. Go see it now! 9/10
