Muni Reviews: Bridesmaids (2011)

Bridesmaids Synopsis: Picked as her best friend's maid of honor, lovelorn and broke Annie looks to bluff her way through the expensive and bizarre rituals with an oddball group of bridesmaids. This film came out nearly 3 months ago, and I’ve been waiting patiently since then to watch it. I never got the chance to go watch it on the big screen, it was just one of those things, o well what can you do. So this week I finally got my hands on a copy and sat down and watched in anticipation. So on to the positives firstly, I love Kristen Wiig, she is a tremendous comedy actress, and has worked very hard to represent women in cinema and TV.  In this film she is like your average women in her late 20’s early 30’s going through a stage in her life where she has nearly hit rock bottom.  She plays her character perfectly, she reminds me a lot of Tina Fey, yes both are talented female comedy actresses, and both have been on SNL. I also like Chris O’Dowd, I liked his work on the IT Crowd, and I’m glad he has had a chance to star in a film like this. He does represent your regular guy; he is the ideal guy to play opposite Kristen, and both have a nice chemistry in the film. Jon Hamm is also great, he plays the A**hole perfectly. Did you know he started of in comedy? You can't really tell with his awesome-ness on Mad Men. The group of girls that are the “Bridesmaids” are the just the right mix, in someway we all know a women with those kind of personalities.  The characters are very funny to watch and the casting is very well chosen. The film is very well written; the characters are also beautiful crafted and you could tell the attention to detail put in by the writers. The director also has a standard job in making this film. That’s not a bad thing, its just there’s not a stand out scene, that made me say wow how did he do that. The film has been compared to the female version of the Hangover, and you can see the similarities, but I do think it is very different to that film. The story and the characters are different too, both of which have excelled in the box office. The one thing I was disappointed about was the fact that the other women in the film didn’t get a lot of film time. Yes the film is roughly 2 hours long, but I think the groups of women in the film are so good they deserve a lot more screen time.  Hopefully there could be some sort of sequel that would be fantastic, but the chances of that happening are slim. Overall I’d say if you want to watch a feel good comedy film then this is the best film to watch. The film is very funny, smart, cute and enjoyable. I don’t think anyone I spoke to about this was disappointed, and nor was I. a must watch for people everywhere. 8/10

The Town(2010) review

Synopsis: As he plans his next job, a longtime thief tries to balance his feelings for a bank manager connected to one of his earlier heists, as well as the FBI agent looking to bring him and his crew down. First off, I'm just gonna address Rebecca Hall's performance in this film. The reason for this is because I somewhat slated her for being a "substandard performer", when in fact, her performance in The Town was excelled far beyond that of her performance in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Just thought I should get that out of the way before I begin the review. So this is me, beginning the review. Nnnnnnnnnow- I was freakin' excited to watch this, simply because Affleck is da bomb. Being his second major Directorial outing, it was nice seeing him perform as well as direct, it made for a fantastic combination, and there was also an admirable cast present in this film, including Jeremy Renner(The Hurt Locker), Jon Hamm(Mad Men), and Blake Lively(Gossip Girl) who added to this already commendable list of names. The unique plot and intricacies of the story reminded me closely of that from Inside Man, for example. What did get at my neck, though, was how the group was able to get away with so much in broad daylight. It's like "Sure, let's hold up a security van at freakin' 9:00AM in the morning and just give anyone who tries to do anything an evil look. Yeah, that'll scare em" Just didn't seem to make sense a certain times, but the other 80% of the time the ways in which the gang got out of tight situations was pretty clever. I did enjoy this film, there were minor similarities to films such as Training Day, Inside Man, and Brooklyn's Finest which drew me to this film and made it an overall action-packed and exciting experience. 7/10 Kazed.

Toy Story 3 (2010) review

Synopsis: The toys are mistakenly delivered to a day-care center instead of the attic right before Andy leaves for college, and it's up to Woody to convince the other toys that they weren't abandoned and to return home. Eleven years after the last Toy Story outing, I would say that it was definitely worth the wait. Containing all the elements that made the past Disney/Pixar films a huge success, Toy Story 3 was a well-done, beautiful masterpiece that has joined the long line of films which have been both a financial and critical triumph. Onto the film. Toy Story 3 was equally as incredible as the previous two feats, but on another level; the story in this film is what made it that little bit more exciting. Toward the climax of the film, there was a moment where I foolishly thought it would abruptly end. How naive I was. Everything that took place in the film was extremely gripping, moving and I felt emotionally touched throughout, having grown up with the film. Although the previous plot involving Buzz Lightyear being recalled sounded more exciting, the new plot was still an exciting, and well-done replacement. The '3D' used in the film was adequate; very reminiscent of that used in the re-release of Toy Story back in January (Review HERE). Honestly, it wasn't required. It feels like the studios are literally slapping a '3D' label on anything to make that extra dollar(or pound, or whatever), and it really didn't work. There were some moments where you could really see the difference(Really just differences in depth of field), and some moments where it just wasn't needed at all. I couldn't help but notice the huge similarity between one of the characters in this film(no spoilers here) and 'The Prospector' from Toy Story 2. Wasn't a bad thing, just felt it needed to be pointed out. This, was a Pixar film, so it was difficult to pick out any flaws. If there were any, I didn't want to know. Toy Story 3 was well worth the 11-year wait, and whether they choose to make a sequel or not, I'll be happy watching the trilogy for years to come. 9.5/10 (Because nothing's perfect) Kazed
