Martyn reviews: Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)

'Planet of the Apes', now I'm sure you've heard of it, is the classic featuring Charlton Heston with a strong feeling of isolation and xenophobia. Now, it is not important however, to have watched the 1968 film to enjoy and understand the smash hit of the summer, yet the added context of the original does enhance the experience. However, Rise of the Planet of the Apes in my eyes, is where Hollywood gets it right. It literally takes what you expect from the story, and runs with it, beautifully. The film follows scientist Will Rodman, brilliantly played by James Franco, as he struggles to come to terms with his father's Alzheimer's disease. The cure he works on is tested in the lab on chimps, and when the project is sabotaged, Will is left with the task of putting down a baby chimp. Deciding instead that the life of the baby is his responsibility, he raises the chimp, called Caesar, at his home with his father. Without divulging anymore information, I can tell you that the film took the conventions of the mainstream film, and just knocked it up a notch. The brilliantly told story of heartache and desperation told through both Will's and Caeser's eyes hits all the right spots. Its a brilliant, and somehow believable ordeal, with a cast of characters and narrative to really take you along with it. The film's digital effects team work wonders on the animals, with close up shots of faces displaying stunning realism, which when mixed with the brilliant motion capture performance of Andy Serkis, you're treated with the suspension of disbelief. All in all, without boring you any further with the details, the directing is spot on for the standard, the acting is brilliant, the story progresses beautifully, and the film is just a good, old fashioned, get your popcorn and watch romp, whilst retaining the important element of making the audience think. Rise of the Planet of the Apes, gets an 8/10 from me, and if you haven't watched it yet, I seriously recommend it.

The movie vultures are out and pulling at everything they can get a hold of, which is why we here at Movieville are looking to jump the boat and give you the same information! Paradise Lost (2012) first concept art

With 2012 set to be one of the biggest summers for film ever, and also the year coinciding with the turning of the Mayan calendar, it makes perfect sense to create Paradise Lost. Paradise Lost is John Milton's poem, depicting the battle of Heaven and Hell, which is going to ooze into Alex Proyas' blockbuster. Proyas is the director of 'I, Robot' and 'The Crow' so expect big bold visuals with a slightly mature approach to the fantastical. Here's the first of the concept art, a teaser taste of what's to come. paradise lost concept art It's nothing much, but it gives a slight sense of what's to come. Bradley Cooper of 'The Hangover' and 'Limitless' is set to play Lucifer, with a release of Summer 2012, book yuour ticket for the end of the world.

The Amazing Spiderman (2012) teaser now online! HD!

Hot off the trails of the recently ended franchise helmed by Sam Raimi with Tobey Maguire, Sony decided to take the more serious, dark and mature approached honed by Christopher Nolan with their Spiderman reboot. Since then photos and news have been coming in thick and fast of what Marc Webb (director of 500 Days of Summer) has decided for the new series. Andrew Garfield stars alongside Emma Stone and Rhys Ifans in the new film, set for a summer release in 2012, to rival The Dark Knight Rises for the title of biggest film. Let's see what you think I don't know if the point of view shot is representative of the feeling rather than the actual footage, but I personally don't feel it fits with the rest of what we've been shown. The film feels like a more human retelling of the classic story, and this shot almost makes it look like a spiderman costume in the game 'Mirror's Edge'. What do you think people? Isn't it exciting? Movieville is just that good!

The Dark Knight Rises (2012) first poster

the dark knight rises teaser poster 1 Here it is ladies and gentlemen, the first teaser poster for 'The Dark Knight Rises'. It marks the first use of traditional promotion for the film slated for 2012, before this was the viral bombardment of twitter to unlock the first official image. With the classic symbol seen in the decaying buildings of Gotham City, the film follows it's predecessor's advertising campaign quite closely, if you'll remember the poster for 'The Dark Knight' where Batman stands below a building baring a burning version of the emblem. Destruction and bats, that is all I need from this campaign!! This information also falls perfectly in time to reinforce the rumour of the first trailer to be screened with Harry Potter! I'm a huge Batman fan, and I remember going to see 'Batman Begins' with my dad, with the final moments hinting at a sequel, I turned to my dad and said: 'that's going to be the best film ever.' he laughed, and nodded, agreeing half heartedly, but then the trailers started. I think this has a lot to live up to, but if any filmmaker can go against the odds in Hollywood, it's Nolan. I cannot wait...
