New trailer for Retreat (2011)

Synopsis: In a last-ditch attempt to save their failing marriage after the stillbirth of their first child, Kate (Thandie Newton), a journalist and Martin (Cillian Murphy), an architect, escape London for a retreat to the beautiful, yet remote and unpopulated Blackholme Island, which is off the west coast of Scotland.  Fairweather Cottage is a place where they once shared a romantic holiday and the island holds fond memories of happier times. Kate and Martin arrive by boat, it's autumn and the rocky barren moors are blown by freezing winds and the before they've even settled in, the generator and CB radio communication start to fail.  Their relationship is already fragile and anxieties are pushed higher when they lose all contact with the mainland and after a heavy storm, an injured man is washed up on the shore. Dressed in military fatigues and carrying a gun, the mysterious stranger regains consciousness and identifies himself as a British soldier called Private Jack Corman and he soon reveals that he carries a deadly message – an airborne virus is sweeping Europe and all their lives are under threat unless they take drastic action.  He insists that the only way to avoid the fatal disease is to seal themselves in the cottage. In a series of tense twists, the captive couple are forced to use their ingenuity to outwit the equally volatile and charismatic Jack in an attempt to unravel the real truth.  Loyalties divide and merge and paranoia sets in, culminating in a violent and shocking conclusion.

Still, the idea of the virus spreading doesn't seem redundant to me. Not yet, anyway. As long as there's an interesting story behind the cause, then I'm behind that. This releases October of this year.

Crash (2004) mini-review

Synopsis: Issues of race and gender cause a group of strangers in Los Angeles to physically and emotionally collide in this drama. Crash is an intense, cleverly series of intertwined stories crammed into one movie. Each 'tale', if you will, has a clever little moral hidden at each of their conclusions, and is exactly what made this film as thought provoking as it was. Each performance from this star-studded cast was as impressive as the plot lines their respective characters were part of, notably Matt Dillon in his role as the racist veteran cop. How he portrayed his character was as charismatic as Dillon could probably get. Thandie Newton and Terrence Howard play the 'victimised' couple harassed by Dillon's character; with Newton encountering the racist officer in a clever twist of fate. There were some emotional moments in the film, three, actually, which stood out for me; The scene with the gun and the locksmith, the scene with Dillon and Newton, and toward the end where we are shown the conclusions for each of the stories. It was so effectively edited, so intricately stitched together making it so seamless. Crash is an incredibly clever film, it seems as though more films are beginning to use the same format(Valentine's Day, He's Just Not That Into You) because it's such an effective way to tell multiple stories at once. 8.5/10 Kazed
